Much of human behavior is under the control of species specific behavior that we are unaware of, and the same is true for dog. In dog training we learn that it is possible to change how the dog behaves, but difficult to get rid of instinctive behavior.
We must accept that much of the behavior we find undesirable is a result of a genetic history. Our genes are like an invisible spirit that controls the destiny of humankind. Our selfish, evil, and aggressive behavior has or at least had survival value of our genes.
But genes are not all to blame. We are also members of a culture. Our culture shapes our genetic potential. We can also see this principle in our dogs. How a genetic predisposition develops in the adult dog is influenced by how a puppy is raised. We can modify how a behavior trait develops. While we cannot take the natural desire to behave in an instinctive way out of the dog we can change how the behavior looks. It’s societies job to provide a nurturing environment for both people and dogs, children and puppies.
And there is even better news – We’re not at the complete mercy of our history. While our histories have shaped everything we now do, tomorrows history has yet to be written. We do have some control over our future with the actions of today.
Most often if a major change is needed so too is planning. Without forethought and planning we are at the mercy of momentum and the winds of fate. It’s difficult to change the direction of a large mass that has momentum. In an abstract sense that mass could be a history. How old are you? How old are human genes, and if you believe in evolution, pre human genes? To consciously change the direction of a huge moving mass takes Effort. It takes energy. To change the direction of a super tanker takes more energy and effort than changing the direction of a kayak.
In dog training we learn that we can change behavior by teaching new ways to behave and making sure those new behaviors are rewarded. One way to teach new behaviors is through training drills or training exercises. We practice new behaviors in a controlled environment until the behavior becomes functional. The drills and the learning environment become a history that allows advanced social behavior to occur.
Wishing all the very best in dog training and in life
