Ancestors and Rules of Nature

Some of the same natural rules for how learned behavior works can be seen in behavior that has a genetic basis. Sometimes these similarities can be difficult to see because behavior that has a genetic origin requires a much broader view to comprehend. Also, behavior from a genetic history takes much longer to change. The long term nature of genetic change is a critical area of concern when implementing mandatory spay and neuter laws.

From our dogs we can learn a great deal about how the behavior of our families affect the behavior of offspring. We can see that some behaviors are passed more easily than others are. We can also see that some behaviors are easier to manage than are others. When we understand these aspects of nature it’ll be easier to understand how the same principles can apply to humanity. When we understand our animal nature we can accept people more easily. When we accept others as a product of their history we can begin to think about what can and can’t be easily changed. When we understand and accept people we can begin to have realistic exceptions of what other people can actually take responsibility for.

The same is true of our dogs. Some dogs just can’t handle certain situation or environments. With a great deal of training we may be able to get the dog to tolerate conditions they normally would avoid. But this type of dog will never be as resilient in the abnormal environments as a naturally more accepting and emotionally hardy dog.

When considering the future of dogs and people we should consider what traits will lead to improving future generations. While we can’t predict exactly what will be needed in the future we can begin to move in a desirable direction. With dogs that direction is easier to predict. The direction we want our dogs’ behavior to move will also give us hints as to the direction human behavior should move.

Wishing all the very best in understanding dogs and in life,
